The loose skin and excessive under-eye bags will remain, no matter how much filler is injected. Blepharoplasty is recommended in cases such as these as it will remove the excess skin and eye bags.

<h2 class='blog-h2'>Are under-eye fillers safe?</h2>
<p class='blog-p'>
While dermal fillers are generally safe, all cosmetic procedures come with risks. The area under your eyes is incredibly delicate and full of blood vessels, and thin skin makes this area especially prone to bruising, one of the most common side effects of fillers for eyes. The other most common side effect is swelling. Both of those issues should resolve within a week.
</p>

Can fillers ever make under-eyes worse? The answer is, unfortunately, yes. If your fillers aren’t placed properly, you can experience what’s called the Tyndall effect. This happens when the filler is injected too close to the skin’s surface and causes the area to have a light bluish hue (as well as swelling) under the eyes because of how the light scatters. It’s possible the eyes could look more sunken too.

Fortunately, this can be treated with an injection of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down the hyaluronic acid in the filler. Another possible, more serious side effect of under-eye fillers gone wrong is the development of nodules (growths of skin tissue) after the injection. Thankfully, those can also be resolved with hyaluronidase. Because of the risks involved, this is one procedure for which you absolutely want to go to someone who is very experienced.

Patients are surprised to find that there is almost no discomfort during treatment of the under-eye area. Despite this, we can still apply a topical anesthetic cream prior to treatment to eliminate any discomfort.

<p class='blog-p'>
Some minor swelling is expected after treatment. This is usually minor and typically resolves within a week. Some patients may also develop minor bruising that can usually be covered with makeup. Patients should avoid exercise for twenty-four hours after the procedure to minimize swelling. Otherwise, patients can resume work and normal activities.

In fact, we encourage our patients to get up and move gently (i.e., walking, gentle leg stretches, etc.) and frequently as soon as possible after their procedures to promote good circulation, prevent blood clots, and ease stiffness and discomfort after surgery.

For the first few days after surgery, you’ll need plenty of rest; however, that doesn’t mean you should just stay in bed all day. Moving helps your body heal, may also reduce pain levels, and can help prevent blood clots. Follow your surgeon’s advice as to how much movement and what types will be appropriate for your specific situation.

In addition, our brains also produce body-repairing hormones when we sleep, including growth hormones, which are necessary for tissue repair and cell regeneration. Depriving yourself of sleep also causes an elevation of cortisol, which puts your body into a constant state of stress. As the body’s largest organ, skin is usually where the first signs of damage appear. Beauty sleep really is essential and ideally, you should try to get seven to eight hours.

We offer all of our surgical patients a complimentary consultation to discuss treatments and/or products that can help optimize your skin&#8217;s health before, during, and after your procedure. Typically, these consults can take place on the same day you&#8217;re here so you can be fully informed of all of your options.</li>
<li>What&#8217;s involved with the surgery (length, anesthesia to be used, pain management, recovery timeframe, postoperative care).</li>
<li>Your medical history.</li>

<h3>3. Surgeon Exam.</h3>

You’ll remain in your own clothes for most of the consultation. If your area of concern is on the breasts or body, the surgeon will leave the room while you change into a robe and return to examine the area following your initial discussion.

Examinations will focus on the areas of interest and will help determine how the proposed procedures can help achieve your cosmetic goals. Photographs may be taken to assist in surgical planning.

<h3>4. Meet with your patient care coordinator.</h3>

Your patient care coordinator is your liaison between you and the practice. She will ensure your questions are addressed quickly as you consider your options before surgery and throughout your surgery and recovery process. She will also assist you with scheduling pre-op appointments, your surgery date, and post-op appointments.

As women go through puberty there are hormonally-based changes in the way fat is organized. Fibrous bands that anchor the skin to the muscle, called septae, pin down fat tissue, resulting in a dimpled &#8220;cottage cheese&#8221; look. It&#8217;s rare in men because their fibrous bands are oriented differently than females.

QWO represents a game-changing breakthrough in modern cosmetic science. By injecting directly into the dimples that create cellulite, QWO helps to break down the collagen-rich bands that pull on the skin&#8217;s surface, contributing to dimpling. It&#8217;s made from an enzyme called collagenase clostridium histolyticum that works underneath the skin to release the thickened collagen and fibrous strings that cause the appearance of cellulite. As people get older, they may look in the mirror and want plastic surgery. It can be a tough decision because with surgery comes risk. In some cases, invasive treatment is not necessary. Surgical and non-surgical procedures are available to help smooth out the signs of stress and aging on the face and body.
</p>

<p class='blog-p'>
Sometimes, surgical and non-surgical treatments work in conjunction. According to Dr. Jeffrey Kyllo of Optum Plastic Surgery, laxity and other signs of facial aging from gravity and sun-exposure can be corrected with surgery. Other things are better fixed with laser aesthetic treatments, &#8220;Resurfacing really focuses on the skin quality, pigmentation, redness, and even acne scarring,&#8221; explains Haley Trudeau, a licensed master esthetician at Optum Plastic Surgery.
</p>

<p class='blog-p'>
Most people thinking about plastic surgery are typically between the ages of 40 and 80. There&#8217;s no real cut off because it&#8217;s really up to when someone wants a new look. &#8220;It can work at any age,&#8221; says Dr. Kyllo, &#8220;My recommendation, though, is that the worse the problem the harder it is to get a good result. So we want to not wait too long.&#8221;
</p>

<p class='blog-p'>
Dr. Kyllo was able to correct one of his patients&#8217; neck laxity and sagging eyes with surgery. Haley performed the resurfacing technique to give her a healthy glow and smoother skin texture.
</p>

<p class='blog-p'>
&#8220;You can really focus on around the mouth where the facelift doesn&#8217;t always get that area,&#8221; explains Haley, &#8220;So we can really improve the texture of the chin and the upper lip wrinkles.&#8221;
</p>

Another patient got a surgical facelift. The aesthetic treatment improved the overall character of her skin.
</p>

<p class='blog-p'>
Simultaneously performing laser resurfacing and plastic surgery comes with advantages. According to Dr. Kyllo, the recovery time for both procedures is just about the same as surgery alone. &#8220;The other thing is that the laser [from resurfacing] hurts just a little bit, so it&#8217;s nice to have the anesthesia there.&#8221;
</p>

<p class='blog-p'>
Healing time varies from patient to patient but it&#8217;s usually at the two-week mark when patients feel comfortable with the results.

Breast cancer treatment can take a toll on a patient&#8217;s body and the road to recovery can be challenging.
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
It&#8217;s important patients know that they can get reconstructive surgery at any time.
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
&#8220;Reconstruction can be done pretty much any time after a mastectomy, so it&#8217;s not necessarily something you have to decide on right away,&#8221; said Dr. Cindy Wei, a board-certified surgeon from Optum Plastic Surgery.
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
One newer type of reconstruction called Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) is a two-stage procedure that uses a patient&#8217;s abdomen tissue to re-create the breasts. This eliminates the need for a traditional implant.
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
During the first stage, the DIEP flap is created and tissue is removed from the lower belly. This is the same tissue that&#8217;s removed during a tummy tuck, &#8220;So an added benefit of the procedure is that you get an improvement in the abdominal contour.&#8221;
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
Dr. Wei explained that because a large piece of tissue is needed, doctors use micro-surgical techniques to ensure the tissue stays alive as it&#8217;s transferred up to the chest. The second stage is more about fine-tuning the shape of the reconstruction to improve symmetry with the opposite breast.
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
&#8220;It&#8217;s a much more complex surgery than implant reconstruction.&#8221;
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
Cancer survivor Ruth Barefoot was diagnosed with breast cancer in her left breast, then a later C.T. scan found lymphoma. After a double mastectomy, she decided to get DIEP instead of implants, &#8220;I wanted to stay organic. I didn&#8217;t want foreign bodies.&#8221;
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
She added, &#8220;I&#8217;ve been joking that my hydraulic bed was primo because you can&#8217;t roll over, you can&#8217;t lay on your side for several months.&#8221; Having that comfort is important, but coaching from the medical team was also encouraging. &#8220;There&#8217;s just a lot of stitches, but there&#8217;s also a great result.&#8221;

&#8220;We&#8217;re constantly striving to make improvements in this procedure, even though it&#8217;s been around for some time now,&#8221; said Dr. Wei.

Dr. Wei Discusses Breast Reconstruction on K5 News

<p class='blog-p'>
One of the major side effects of chemotherapy and endocrine treatment (i.e. Tamoxifen) is unfortunately rarely discussed with women by their physicians. This side effect is all too familiar for women who are post-menopausal. Furthermore, this symptom is what commonly drives post-menopausal women to seek out hormone replacement therapy (which can increase her risk of breast cancer) and even worse, drives women who are receiving endocrine treatment for breast cancer, to discontinue this medication prior to completing the treatment. If you haven’t guessed by now, we are talking about severe vaginal dryness and the negative effects this has for a woman’s sexual health and intimate relationships.
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
I find myself wondering, if women had an alternative solution to vaginal dryness, would they perhaps forego hormone replacement therapy, and thus not put their breast health at risk? Furthermore, I am willing to bet that if this symptom was avoidable, there would be a substantial number of women who would complete their endocrine therapy (which is typically 5 years). Lastly, for women who undergo chemotherapy, the side effect of vaginal dryness continues well beyond the completion of her treatment. This can last for years or may be permanent.
</p>
<h2 class='blog-h2'>Why are we not talking about this? Why are we not doing something about this?</h2>
<p class='blog-p'>
There are emerging technologies that work by increasing blood flow and collagen deposition to restore normal vaginal lubrication and function. These technologies have been adapted from aesthetic energy delivery systems initially used to tighten facial skin and prevent aging. There are a variety of different energy delivery systems (radiofrequency and laser resurfacing) that are used to restore normal function. This may be effective for symptoms associated with normal aging, medication side effects, and childbirth. This procedure may be effective after just a single session or may require a short series of treatments. This procedure is completely painless. The safety and efficacy has been extensively studied and verified in Europe, Asia, and South America. It is currently being evaluated by the FDA and thus incurs an “out-of-pocket” expense for the patient at this time. In the US, this procedure will cost $2500-4000.
</p>
<p class='blog-p'>
Although there are multiple systems available, I personally chose to bring the Geneveve by Viveve into my own practice. This system combines surface cryogen cooling with deep delivery of radiofrequency energy. This cooling of the surface allows the deep tissue to be heated stimulating the body to create additional blood flow and make new collagen. Most patients require one painless 30 minute treatment. There is no downtime and the effects generally become noticeable in just a few weeks with continued improvement over several months. Patients with more severe symptoms sometimes require a series of treatments.</p>

The segment also features their patient Carrie Stark, a young mother of three who recently underwent treatment for breast cancer at Optum Plastic Surgery, including breast reconstruction using the DIEP flap method. She has recovered from surgery, is feeling great, and back to her daily routine and family activities.

Our Surgeons Featured on King 5’s Evening News

Plastic surgeon Dr. Phil Haeck and his patient were featured in a segment on KING-5&#8217;s New Day Northwest on Wednesday, May 10. They talked about breast reduction surgery and the main reason many women choose to have it done: pain.

Dr. Haeck shared that women with a large chest size often have chronic pain in their back, shoulders, and neck. Most have tried chiropractors, physical therapy, massage, and over-the-counter pain medications to manage their symptoms with limited results. Most insurance companies now cover the outpatient procedure for patients who qualify.

Dr. Haeck’s patient talked about having migraine headaches for years due to constant neck pain before finally deciding to move forward with the surgery with Dr. Haeck. She added that her surgery and recovery were quick and easy and that her migraines are gone.</p>
