Top 5 Breast Reconstruction Myths

Under-eye filler may be one of the few procedures that can actually refresh the appearance of your under-eye area without surgery, depending on what exactly is causing the issues. However, it’s important to know if you are a good candidate for this procedure. The advice below can help you decide whether or not under-eye fillers are going to be right for you.
It’s important to distinguish between dark circles or puffy eyes caused by loss of volume from under-eye wrinkles or dark circles caused by hyperpigmentation in the area. If a patient has true pigmentation, then dermal 
fillers won’t help. In other words, if the skin under your eye is darker because that’s your natural complexion or because of prior sun damage, dermal fillers, unfortunately, won’t change that. If, however, the darkness is a 
result of skin laxity from aging or genetics, then a filler may help by adding volume and evenness to fill the hollowness of the dark circles without adding puffiness. Our skilled aesthetic nurse injectors or board-certified plastic surgeons can help you make that determination.
Also, under-eye fillers won’t do much for people with larger bags under the eyes, especially if fat has collected in the area, which can happen as you age. In those cases, we usually recommend blepharoplasty—a surgical procedure that involves tightening the under-eye area by removing sagging skin, muscle, and/or fat—instead.
The benefits of fillers for under-eye wrinkles or dark circles include brightening of the skin and restored volume under the eyes. Under-eye fillers can address wrinkles and fine lines and, because they fill the hollowness under the eyes, they can even out the sunken appearance of the under-eye area.
Why can’t loose skin and excessive under-eye bags be treated?
If you have loose skin or large under-eye bags you won’t be happy with the 
results of tear trough filler. The loose skin and excessive under-eye bags 
will remain, no matter how much filler is injected. Blepharoplasty is 
recommended in cases such as these as it will remove the excess skin and eye 
bags.
Are under-eye fillers safe?
While dermal fillers are generally safe, all cosmetic procedures come with 
risks. The area under your eyes is incredibly delicate and full of blood 
vessels, and thin skin makes this area especially prone to bruising, one of 
the most common side effects of fillers for eyes. The other most common side 
effect is swelling. Both of those issues should resolve within a week.
Can fillers ever make under-eyes worse? The answer is, unfortunately, yes. If 
your fillers aren’t placed properly, you can experience what’s called the 
Tyndall effect. This happens when the filler is injected too close to the 
skin’s surface and causes the area to have a light bluish hue (as well as 
swelling) under the eyes because of how the light scatters. It’s possible the 
eyes could look more sunken too.
Fortunately, this can be treated with an injection of hyaluronidase, an enzyme 
that breaks down the hyaluronic acid in the filler. Another possible, more 
serious side effect of under-eye fillers gone wrong is the development of 
nodules (growths of skin tissue) after the injection. Thankfully, those can 
also be resolved with hyaluronidase. Because of the risks involved, this is 
one procedure for which you absolutely want to go to someone who is very 
experienced.
Is under-eye treatment painful?
Patients are surprised to find that there is almost no discomfort during 
treatment of the under-eye area. Despite this, we can still apply a topical 
anesthetic cream prior to treatment to eliminate any discomfort.
What is the recovery like after under-eye treatment?
Some minor swelling is expected after treatment. This is usually minor and 
typically resolves within a week. Some patients may also develop minor 
bruising that can usually be covered with makeup. Patients should avoid 
exercise for twenty-four hours after the procedure to minimize swelling. 
Otherwise, patients can resume work and normal activities.
How long do under-eye fillers last?
Dermal fillers typically last from 6 months to a year, but under-eye fillers 
tend to last longer than that. Results will vary from patient to patient. 
Because the fillers are in an area of your face that moves less than, say, 
your lips, the results tend to last longer than in other parts of the face.

While each patient and procedure is different, the good news is that you can significantly impact your recovery process by carefully following all of your surgeon&#8217;s post-operative instructions.

However, when it’s time to recover, you&#8217;re the one in control. By taking the following tips into account, you can help mitigate the risk of complications that could impact your results.
So, what exactly can you do to help ensure a smooth recovery after your procedure?
Start with realistic expectations.
The patients who are most happy with their results go into surgery with realistic expectations. The more informed you are before your surgery, the more likely you&#8217;ll be satisfied with the results of a well-done operation.
Keep in mind that your recovery process is just that, a process. After surgery of any kind, you’re going to look (and feel) worse before you get better. Nearly all surgical procedures will involve some degree of bruising and swelling and you won’t be able to see the full effect of your results for a few weeks or months. Plan accordingly for how your post-surgical downtime will affect your work, family responsibilities, and social activities.
If you smoke, quit.
As a general rule, patients who smoke should quit at least eight weeks before undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure. Once the surgery is over, that doesn’t mean you can pick up the habit again. Smoking affects your circulation and can significantly delay the healing process, which can lead to serious complications during recovery.
Nicotine slows healing and increases the risk for complications that can leave a lasting negative impact on your health and your results. Even one slip-up can raise the risk of complications.
Have your caretakers lined up.
Be sure to arrange for a family member or friend to take care of you for the first 48 to 72 hours after surgery. If they are able to help out for longer, even better!
Even though you may feel like you can resume your normal routines right away, having someone there to help you will give you peace of mind which allows you to focus on your healing. If you are responsible for others, such as children or parents, be sure to arrange for someone else to care for them so you can focus on your recovery.
Ask for help from others.
Asking for help with tasks you are normally perfectly capable of doing yourself can be tough. But after surgery, you’ll need to let others do the heavy lifting for a few weeks. Your incision sites need time to heal internally and externally, and straining them too soon can cause scars to stretch or can even lead to bleeding.
Make it easier on yourself by preparing before your procedure. Set your home up to allow you easy access to items you use frequently, and outsource tasks such as meal preparation, shopping, childcare, and cleaning to friends and family.
Follow your surgeon’s specific instructions.
Trust your surgeon’s medical expertise and experience. Have a question after surgery? Don’t be tempted to surf the internet looking for post-surgical advice. Even “trustworthy” sources of online information can not replace instructions from your plastic surgeon who knows your medical history and all the details of your specific procedure. Resist the urge to try to answer your questions online and instead call your plastic surgeon with any concerns. We can’t stress enough how important it is to always follow the specific advice your surgeon will provide to help ensure a safe and smooth recovery.
Stay on top of the pain.
Pain, bruising, and swelling are all part of your body’s natural recovery process and are normal components of the post-surgical experience. That said, some patients feel compelled to “tough it out” and attempt to push through or ignore any pain. It’s important not to let the pain catch up with you which can actually lengthen your recovery time.
Additionally, be sure to avoid over-the-counter herbal remedies, which can not only thin the blood, but may also interfere with prescription medications.
Be sure to move around.
A common misconception among patients is that they’ll be completely bedridden for days after their surgery. This is almost never the case. In fact, we encourage our patients to get up and move gently (i.e., walking, gentle leg stretches, etc.) and frequently as soon as possible after their procedures to promote good circulation, prevent blood clots, and ease stiffness and discomfort after surgery.
For the first few days after surgery, you’ll need plenty of rest; however, that doesn’t mean you should just stay in bed all day. Moving helps your body heal, may also reduce pain levels, and can help prevent blood clots. Follow your surgeon’s advice as to how much movement and what types will be appropriate for your specific situation.
Avoid strenuous exercise.
While some movement will definitely help with healing, strenuous exercise can setback your recovery. Many patients are anxious to return to their normal workout routines but in order to speed recovery time, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks after surgery.
Why is this so important?
Working out elevates blood pressure, which can increase bruising, bleeding, and inflammation. Patients who engage in vigorous workout regimens too soon after surgery can experience serious complications, such as re-opening of incisions. Even if you think you’re ready to return to the gym, consult with your surgeon before resuming your pre-surgery activity levels.
Doing too much too soon is a common mistake patients make after surgery. It’s normal to feel restless at some point during your recovery and it may be tempting to jump back into more strenuous tasks. However, it’s important to understand that your body is still healing for several weeks after you feel “normal” again. The good news is that feeling great early in the process is a sign your recovery is going well and that you are giving your body the rest it needs. You’ll be able to resume daily activities a few weeks after most procedures.
Don’t take herbs, supplements, or medications without your doctor&#8217;s permission.
Many normally safe supplements, herbs, and medications can be dangerous or can inhibit healing after surgery. Ibuprofen (Advil), green tea, turmeric, and other everyday anti-inflammatory substances are just a few examples of products that can increase the risk of bleeding after surgery. Other herbs and medications may interact with anesthesia or pain medications. Your surgeon will give you a list of items to avoid. The general rule is to refrain from using “banned substances&#8221; for at least 2-3 weeks before surgery and 2-3 weeks after, but always remember to simply follow your surgeon’s direction on this.
Go to your follow-up visits after surgery.
Your post-surgery follow-up appointments are important to ensure you are healing as expected. These visits are an excellent time to ask questions and express any concerns you may have about your recovery. Also, it’s at these appointments that your surgeon can give you the green light to resume exercise, take a dip in the pool, or shop for new bras after breast augmentation or reconstruction.

10 tips for a smooth post-surgical recovery.

The holidays are a wonderful time to enjoy the company of friends and family, but all the celebrating can also take a toll on your skin. Read on to learn some of our best holiday skincare tips to keep your skin merry and bright this holiday season.
1. Be sure you get your beauty sleep, so your skin has a chance to repair itself.
Late-night holiday celebrations can lead to a lack of sleep which deprives 
your skin of the chance to repair itself. Our brain’s lymphatic system flushes 
out neurotoxins and is turned on mainly during sleep. In addition, our brains 
also produce body-repairing hormones when we sleep, including growth hormones, 
which are necessary for tissue repair and cell regeneration. Depriving 
yourself of sleep also causes an elevation of cortisol, which puts your body 
into a constant state of stress. As the body’s largest organ, skin is usually 
where the first signs of damage appear. Beauty sleep really is essential and 
ideally, you should try to get seven to eight hours.
2. Avoid too much sugar which accelerates skin aging.
Enjoying all the delicious treats is one of the best parts of holiday 
celebrations. That said, indulging too much in sugary desserts can have a 
negative impact on your skin. A high sugar intake plays a role in the skin’s 
aging process, accelerating the development of wrinkles and fine lines. In 
addition, excessive sugar can also cause oil production and inflammation which 
can lead to acne breakouts. A process called glycation may also play a role in 
skin aging. When processed sugar enters the bloodstream it will sometimes 
attach to collagen and elastin proteins in the skin and start to break them 
down. This causes the skin to lose its elasticity and wrinkles begin to form.
3. Avoid too much alcohol which can damage the skin.
Alcohol and the holidays tend to go hand-in-hand but drinking too many 
cocktails results in two things: dehydration and inflammation. Dehydration 
deprives your skin of the moisture and nutrients it needs to keep your 
complexion looking radiant and youthful. This can increase the appearance of 
wrinkles, dryness, and sagging skin and overall just leaves your skin looking 
dull. Alcohol also inflames the tissue which creates a histamine reaction that 
creates redness, or flushing of the skin. Alcohol-induced inflammation can 
also lead to acne, blotchiness, and puffiness and can aggravate Rosacea.
Holiday drinking can wreak havoc on your skin but some drinks are worse than 
others. Dark spirits such as whiskey, scotch, or dark rum are the worst 
culprits. Instead of a booze-filled holiday drink, try a wine spritzer with 
sparkling water and a splash of red wine. Red wine spritzers are a great way 
to satisfy a craving without overdoing it. Red wine is full of antioxidants 
and a splash of it can actually be good for your skin.
4. Don’t forget to remove makeup before bed as it can clog your 
pores.
It’s easy to skip washing your face after a late night of celebrating with 
family and friends but this can clog your pores and make your skin a breeding 
ground for bacteria. Sleep allows your body to renew itself which keeps your 
skin bright and fresh. But heading to bed without first removing your makeup 
inhibits this natural process from occurring. As you sleep your skin cells are 
working to repair and regenerate. Built-up bacteria and pollutants from makeup 
prevent this from happening. Leaving your makeup on can also trap residual oil 
which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Overall, sleeping with makeup 
on leads to premature aging so be sure to set aside a few minutes before bed 
to wash your face.
5. Try to avoid stress, it compromises your skin’s natural barrier.
There’s no denying the holidays can be a stressful time—and stress can have a 
tremendous negative impact on the skin. Stress induces the release of cortisol 
which can lead to stress-induced skin breakouts or acne. Chronic stress also 
disrupts the skin’s natural barrier, which prevents harmful substances from 
penetrating and fluids from escaping. This can lead to irritated and 
dehydrated skin which makes fine lines and wrinkles more evident. Stress also 
weakens your immune system which can make skin conditions worse by lowering

What Is a Chemical Peel?

There are two types of lasers: ablative and nonablative. Ablative lasers are 
more intense and as a result, tend to provide the best results. Nonablative 
lasers are not as powerful so multiple sessions may be required for best 
results.

likely be the best option. For deep wrinkles, stubborn pigment, or vascular

Once a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer a mastectomy or lumpectomy may be recommended as part of their treatment, and many women will consider reconstructive surgery to rebuild their breasts. Separating fact from fiction when it comes to the risks and benefits is also essential to making informed shared decisions about care.
There are many myths surrounding breast reconstruction that can complicate decision-making. 2. Breast reconstruction surgery is expensive.
Fortunately, federal law requires insurance to cover breast reconstruction 
surgery in most cases. In 1998, Congress passed the Women&#8217;s Health and Cancer 
Rights Act, which requires group and individual health plans to cover breast 
reconstruction surgeries if they cover mastectomies as part of their coverage. 
This critical law benefits women who are facing a breast cancer diagnosis and 
protects their rights to the availability of breast reconstruction if their 
insurance covers mastectomies. Check with your insurance provider to 
understand your coverage as well as any out-of-pocket costs that may be 
associated with surgery.
3. Reconstructed breasts don’t look natural.
Thanks to advances in plastic surgery, today’s breast reconstruction 
techniques have evolved in such a way that it may be difficult to distinguish 
reconstructed breasts from a woman&#8217;s original breasts. Breast implants have 
come a long way since their inception. New materials and improved techniques 
have resulted in reconstructed breasts that look and feel more natural than 
they have in the past. Some women feel that their reconstructed breasts look 
even better than their original ones did. Those who opt to use their own 
tissue to reconstruct may find that their breasts feel even more natural as 
compared to how they may feel with implants.

immediate reconstruction. Others may opt to delay reconstruction 
until after their cancer treatment is complete. Either way, breast 
reconstruction is not typically a one-and-done procedure. The process 
typically involves more than one surgery and can be done either at the time of 
initial cancer treatment or even years later if preferred. The timing of your 
reconstruction is a personal choice that is decided on after collaboration 
between you and your plastic surgeon.
5. Breast reconstruction will only involve one surgery.
Most women will typically require a few surgeries to complete their breast 
reconstruction. The number of procedures will depend upon a variety of factors 
including the type of reconstruction you choose, your individual recovery, and 
your goals.

After a small blood draw, we will run your blood through a tool called a

use the SkinPen microneedling device along with a hydrating serum to create 
controlled injuries to the skin.
The channels made from the microneedling stimulate collagen production, 
inducing a natural healing process. It also creates channels that allow 
topical gels and creams, and the PRP to be absorbed. Once the microneedling 
treatment is completed the plasma is massaged over the treated areas of the 
skin. This helps the platelets and beneficial growth factors in the PRP 
penetrate deep into your skin so they can work their rejuvenating magic.
Adding PRP to your microneedling session will also help decrease 
post-treatment symptoms like swelling and redness.  It will enhance the

How many sessions will I need?
Some people opt to do just one but you will need more than one treatment to 
see optimal results.  We recommend a series of 4-6 sessions done about 
every 4 weeks.
Should I avoid anything before and after the procedure?
You should avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs a week before the 
treatment. You should also avoid unprotected sun exposure, as well as 
alcohol-based products and exfoliants while your skin is healing.
Is there any downtime?
There is very minimal downtime with microneedling alone or with PRP. You may 
experience soreness, bruising, swelling, or redness that should subside within 
4-6 days after the treatment. If you are prone to cold sores, take antiviral 
medication 2 days before treatment.
When will I see improvement?
Subtle results can be seen after one treatment but can take a few weeks to 
produce full results as the body needs time to produce collagen.  In the 
weeks following treatment, your skin will show continued improvement.
How long do the results last?
Results can last as long as 12-18 months.
What are the possible side effects?
This treatment is generally very well tolerated. Possible side effects may

Patient appointments will be thoughtfully spaced to reduce the number of people in our office and to effectively eliminate wait times.
You will be greeted by a staff member, who will screen all patients and staff who enter our office.
Your temperature will be taken with our no-touch thermometer and you will be given a mask to wear throughout your visit. Surgeons and staff will also be wearing masks.
We can’t wait to see you again, but we’ll still maintain social distancing. We have modified the flow of our spaces with this in mind.
Our visitor policy has been updated, so that one caregiver may accompany a patient with cognitive or physical limitations or disabilities or a patient who is a minor. We are asking that all other visitors remain at home or in 
their car.
We’ve enhanced our already-stringent sanitation protocol to ensure a thorough and continually disinfected and pristine environment.
Surgical patients will be required to receive a pre-operative COVID test prior to their surgery date.

Dr. Wei Discusses Breast Reconstruction on K5 News

One of the major side effects of chemotherapy and endocrine treatment (i.e. Tamoxifen) is unfortunately rarely discussed with women by their physicians. This side effect is all too familiar for women who are post-menopausal. Furthermore, this symptom is what commonly drives post-menopausal women to seek out hormone replacement therapy (which can increase her risk of breast cancer) and even worse, drives women who are receiving endocrine treatment for breast cancer, to discontinue this medication prior to completing the treatment. If you haven’t guessed by now, we are talking about severe vaginal dryness and the negative effects this has for a woman’s sexual health and intimate relationships.
I find myself wondering, if women had an alternative solution to vaginal dryness, would they perhaps forego hormone replacement therapy, and thus not put their breast health at risk? Furthermore, I am willing to bet that if this symptom was avoidable, there would be a substantial number of women who would complete their endocrine therapy (which is typically 5 years). Lastly, for women who undergo chemotherapy, the side effect of vaginal dryness continues well beyond the completion of her treatment. This can last for years or may be permanent.
<h4>Why are we not talking about this? Why are we not doing something about this?</h4>
There are emerging technologies that work by increasing blood flow and collagen deposition to restore normal vaginal lubrication and function. These technologies have been adapted from aesthetic energy delivery systems initially used to tighten facial skin and prevent aging. There are a variety of different energy delivery systems (radiofrequency and laser resurfacing) that are used to restore normal function. This may be effective for symptoms associated with normal aging, medication side effects, and childbirth. This procedure may be effective after just a single session or may require a short series of treatments. This procedure is completely painless. The safety and efficacy has been extensively studied and verified in Europe, Asia, and South America. It is currently being evaluated by the FDA and thus incurs an “out-of-pocket” expense for the patient at this time. In the US, this procedure will cost $2500-4000.
Although there are multiple systems available, I personally chose to bring the Geneveve by Viveve into my own practice. This system combines surface cryogen cooling with deep delivery of radiofrequency energy. This cooling of the surface allows the deep tissue to be heated stimulating the body to create additional blood flow and make new collagen. Most patients require one painless 30 minute treatment. There is no downtime and the effects generally become noticeable in just a few weeks with continued improvement over several months. Patients with more severe symptoms sometimes require a series of treatments. The most important thing you can do all year – particularly in the summer sun – is wear sunscreen.

Our Surgeons Featured on King 5’s Evening News

Plastic surgeon <a href="https://polyclinicclone.kinsta.cloud/team/doctor-phil-haeck/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dr. Phil Haeck</a> and his patient were featured in a segment on KING-5&#8217;s New Day Northwest on Wednesday, May 10. They talked about breast reduction surgery and the main reason many women choose to have it done: pain.
Dr. Haeck shared that women with a large chest size often have chronic pain in their back, shoulders, and neck. Most have tried chiropractors, physical therapy, massage, and over-the-counter pain medications to manage their symptoms with limited results. Most insurance companies now cover the outpatient procedure for patients who qualify.
Dr. Haeck’s patient talked about having migraine headaches for years due to constant neck pain before finally deciding to move forward with the surgery with Dr. Haeck. She added that her surgery and recovery were quick and easy and that her migraines are gone.
